The role of women within society had significantly changed during the course of World War II. For the first time, women were needed to take jobs that had been seen as only for men. They were needed to assist in the war effort. During this time, however, the Holocaust occurred, making it harder for women to participate within society. Women of specific backgrounds were targeted by the German officials and they were persecuted for anything from their race to their religion. Women were treated differently than men in the concentration camps. They were constantly taken advantage of, both physically and mentally. Although some women were persecuted during the Holocaust, others were fortunate enough to be a part of the effort to stop it. Women participated in the resistance and aid and rescue for many of the Holocaust victims. Overall, women's role in the Holocaust was significant to European history.
